The University Arms did not deliver what I expected from a DeVere hotel. Room 136 was very cramped, decoratively tired, and very noisy having a roof extractor unit directly outside of the window, and being situated above a function room, hosting a party into the night. Food in the restaurant was less than average. Pleasant and comfortable stay.

The staff are extremely warm and friendly. The room lacked plugs, there was no alarm clock, the lighting in the bathroom was poor, and the place could have benefited from being redecorated. Also, it was difficult to use the hairdryer as the switch didn't stay on without being held. However, the rooms were warm.

Room was fine to stay for a night. Noisy early moring. No wireless and broadband was not working.

Very disappointing for price. Good location but very tired decor. Our room was facing the street and it felt that there we were open to the street. The noise level was terrible. Upon arrival the university arms hotel is very nice the down stairs is all immaculate and the staff very welcoming. However upon arrival into our room, it was a different story. The bathroom could only fit one person in at a time , the shower curtain and tiles were mouldy, there was wall paper coming away from the walls, and dust in corners and around […] the back of furniture. The hairdryer didnt work,.We complained and the hotel manager was very apologetic and moved us into a executive room. Which was clean and would have been lovely 20 years ago, but there were stains on the carpet a hole in the sofa , scratches on the furniture, wallpaper coming of the walls and just generally in need of refurbishing. Also the bed was so uncomfy me and my partner both rolled into the middle and ended up with back ache! The hotel is smack-bang in the centre of Cambridge - a brilliant location! It is an old hotel, and for the same price you could probably get something a bit less worn, but that did not really detract. I covered half my stay with Welcome Rewards, which made it more affordable. We had a twin room, and the two single beds weren't the most comfortable, […] but the duvets were AWESOME!! Did not want to get up in the morning!! Covered parking is available on-site, but the cost was not made clear to us when we arrived and the charge upon check-out was a bit of a shock at first, but on retrospect I guess that's not too bad for 24 hours in a UK city-centre. Central location. Staff very friendly and helpful. Very comfortable beds. Perfect for sightseeing Cambridge.

We have stayed at this hotel a number of times when the rate is competitive. Full of character and charm. Nice breakfast. They do seem to have a problem with their wake up calls as on two occassions (different visits) we did not receive them, so use your own alarm if you have an early start.

Convenient location, friendly staff, excellent breakfast, plenty of parking space, nice green view.... But the room is too worn out.

I stayed for 2 weeks on buisness. Great hotel durring the week. Often has ballroom events on the weekend that can be loud on weekend nights (until midnight). If you are staying the weekend check on scheduled events or request a room on the higher floors.

Booked a quad room but on arrival had been given a double room with an extra bed which we had to climb over to get to the TV, hairdryer etc. We had paid extra to have a larger room. Faded glory is how I would describe it - but good location and great breakfast. rReception staff were pleasant - some of the bar staff a bit brusque.

+ convenient location + variety of choice for breakfast + room size - noise from aggregates - air conditioning didn't work

Good location, great breakfast. But the interior could use some refreshing. And how about a business center? There is none. Very British and traditional. Has a lot of charm and with a few added touches it could be a great hotel.

This is my preferred hotel when I stay in Cambridge. My meetings are only five minutes away and the city centre is five minutes the other way - all very convenient. Staff are always very considerate and the breakfasts are legendary! I've never had a bad experience at the University Arms.

Great location, public rooms and breakfast but let down by the room which had poor lighting and heating, tired bathroom and window rattled by the wind all night disturbing sleep.

A bit tired and frayed around the edges, like a comfortable old armchair, the De Vere University Arms Hotel scores highly on location. Ask for a room away from the main road and you're likely to get a decent night's sleep. Cambridge has an energetic nightlife and our room was amazingly quiet, given the rip-roaring din from the pub opposite.

Very charming, "old", traditionally hotel place near the city centre of Cambridge. Great hall, reception, bar(!) and breakfast room(!). Hopefully to return back to this great hotel. "Old" hotel with "old" fashioned style, but in very good shape, and taken care of.

This hotel is very central, ideal for exploring Cambridge on foot and easy to reach by bus from the railway station. The rooms are spotlessly clean with flat screen TVs and an en-suite with bath. We were slightly doubtful about booking this hotel because of mixed reviews, but our experience was good. The location is ideal, on the edge of Parker's Piece, near the centre of Cambridge. We got a very good deal for double bed and full English breakfast. The room was comact but well furnished, with desk space and two comfortable charis with a small […] table, and a comfortable bed. generally very clean, although some of the furniture showed slight wear. Very generous drawer space, and a wardrobe with a safe. The bathroom was small, but good counter space for our things (often an issue in hotels), and an excellent over-bath shower. Breakfast is in a very spacious room ((the "Ballroom") overlooking Parker's Piece, with a very wide selection on the Buffet, plus some extra items to order all included. From pleasant reception to well appointed room in a perfect location the stay was worthy of a return.

One reason we chose this hotel was for the parking..on arrival there were no parking spaces left and we had to waste 40 minutes late at night trying to park our car, only managing to do so when a member of the general public came to drive their car away. There is nothing stopping anyone parking - no barrier or surveillance. We had booked a double room […] and were given a twin room which stank of drains. We never normally complain but could not face inhaling drain smells. We were moved to a room with a small double bed but the worst aspect of the whole stay was the walls are paper thin. We heard EVERYTHING going on in the room next door, talking, TV, moving things about and eventually an enormous fight as we have reason to believe a prostitue had been invited to the room. We slept very little... However, the rest of the hotel seemed fine and breakfast was good. We complained to the manager the next morning about all the above and he responded well,giving us back 50%. The hotel was comfortable and conveniently located very close to the centre. The surrounding area had a range of restaurants and pubs and a small supermarket. Breakfast was tasty and there was plenty of choice for all. The room was small but comfortable, the only issue was that there was no ceiling light fitting and no bedside lights, which made the […] room quite dark and meant I had to climb out of bed to turn off the lights with the switch on the other side of the room. Being an old Victorian building, floors are very creaky and with the occupant of the adjoining room moving around at 2 a.m. I wished I'd remembered my earplugs as it got very loud at some point. Excellent service, welcoming friendly and professional, wonderful breakfast, fantastic location, reasonable room.

The staff were very friendly and helpfull, breakfast was ok but we did not have a pleasant stay. The room appeared dirty and in serious need of updating. The sofa in our room was visibly stained and unsightly. If you stay here ask for a room away from the front of the building. Not brilliant service to be honest. They closed the 24hr bar and left us sat alone in an empty room with most of the lights out and shutters down on the bar. Not very hospitable ! We went to the room to order room service and our phone didn't work. For the same price you can get much better accomadation elsewhere.

Good hotel, surprisingly good buffet breakfast and comfortable room. Only slight concern was expensive on site car parking but it is Cambridge so to be expected. Location is brilliant for Cambridge Centre and there is a lot to do including many pubs, restaurants and events all within very easy walking distance.

The Hotel was a bit dated and the first room I was allocated smelt of cigarette smoke and yet it was all non-smoking. However I was then updgraded and on moving room, it was much better. However, it was very hot and there was no air conditioning. The staff were very nice and the place did seem clean.

Average hotel at reasonable price. Upside - centrally located, good breakfasts, and friendly bar. Downside - rooms were clean but tired. tv/hairdryer old, as was the lift (in which some poor soul got stuck while we were there !), spa facilities a car journey away. Overall, it served us well, but without the glamour & glitz of the hotel website !

This hotel is old and not very comfortable. The bathroom is very outdated, the outlets don't work well. The room was small and stuffy. Did not enjoy my stay, couldn't wait to leave. Stayed there for only 2 nights.

The breakfast room was impressive and was full of old world splendour but the main entrance to the hotel was on a busy street, the entrance itself was very shabby and our room was not nice. Spent 1 night @ the hotel. The hotel room was on the main street. The noise from the street was not acceptable. It ruined sleep of the evening. I spoke w/the head concierge & she did not seem to care. The hotel location is great but it is shabby & the service appaling for the price of the room. It seems to be central for many local weddings.

This hotel in historic Cambridge combines convenient location, professional service, commodious rooms with reasonable prices. The hotel is in a great location, and the old part of the hotel looks very grand from across Parker's Piece. Reception is fine and staff are friendly. The main function rooms look OK. My bedroom was pretty small and the decor transported me back to the 80's. It felt like an old B&B - at B&B prices this wouldn't be a problem but at the price I paid […] (OK, so would have been cheaper if booked earlier) it was pretty disappointing. I expected the rooms to be in need of a refurb from the other reviews here. However, I was disappointed with the obvious lack of cleaning the rooms receive. Skirting boards, carpet around the skirting boards and plugs covered in a think layer of dust. The bathroom was also poorly cleaned, ((room 202). The carpet was thread bare, and the skiting board […] was loose from the wall, but the bed linen was clean. Another customer had completed a comments card from 11th May which was still on the table in the room when I left on the 17th May. I gave my feedback at reception on leaving the hotel and also mentioned this comments card, he said he would retrieve the card, but I suspect it may still be there. This hotel is fine, but its website really sells itself up, it looks like a 1960's office block, and the rooms are in need of refurbishment. In saying that, staff are helpful/friendly, the rooms are clean, and the location is good. It is a midrange hotel, unfortunetly I paid above the odds for, hence my dissapointment.
