Yonggungsa Temple
Tranquil temple guarded by a zelkova tree

- Szokatlan
Yonggungsa is a relatively small traditional temple located at the northeastern foot of Baegunsan Mountain on Yeongjongdo. It was originally called Baegunsa when it was first constructed by Great Monk Wonhyo in the 10th year of King Munmu’s reign (670 CE) during the Silla Dynasty but, in 1854 (5th year of King Cheoljong’s reign), it was renovated by Heungseon Daewongun and renamed Yonggungsa. The temple features various buildings including Gwaneumjeon, Yonghwanggak, Chilseonggak and Yosachae as well as a recently built, 11-metre-tall Maitreya.
Another attraction of Yonggungsa is the two zelkova trees at the entrance of the temple. Over 1,300 years old, these zelkova trees protect the temple as grandfather and grandmother trees. Once you walk up to Gwaneumjeon behind Yonggungsa, you will find the Rock of Wishes that is known to answer people’s prayers. It is said that, when you bow three times, make a wish and rotate a round stone, your wish will come true if it feels like the stone sticks to the magnet. If you have a prayer that you really want answered, how about visiting Yonggungsa this weekend?

Daecheongdo Island
Sand desert with exotic scenery
- Kaland
- Kép
- Szokatlan
On Okjukdong Beach on Daecheongdo Island, which is about 4 hours away from Incheon by boat, there is a vast sand desert. The landscape is a coastal dune formed as the sand, originally seated in areas next to the sea, is pushed from the waters to the land over time. On the outside, it looks similar to a desert, which is why it is also called a sand desert. It is possible to find developed coastal dunes on several beaches in Korea but the sand desert on Daecheongdo Island boasts an enormous scale - 1 km wide, 500 metres long and 80 metres high.
Presenting exotic scenery that you can only see in a foreign country, the sand desert is an active coastal dune whose shape and form change from one season to the next, which is why it is considered extremely mystical and marvellous. There is also a replica camel in the desert, so take a picture with it and create a scene that seems to be straight from the Middle East.

Sudoguksan Daldongne Museum
Time travel into our memories

- Történelmi környezet
- Szokatlan
Sudoguksan Daldongne Museum is an experience-oriented museum with the theme of the lives of the Daldongne people of the 1960s and 1970s. Sudoguksan is the mountain seated behind Dongincheon Station in Dong-gu, Incheon, and the term, “Daldongne,” means that its high location makes it easier to see the moon. Today, apartment complexes and parks have replaced the old Daldongne so a museum was built in the area to preserve its traces and footsteps.
In the exhibition hall of Sudoguksan Daldongne Museum, scenes and the lives of Daldongne from the good old days are re-enacted as props and human figures. It is also fun to experience wearing a water-carrying yoke or old school uniforms rather than merely looking at them. On the rooftop of the museum, there is an artwork titled “Public Art Project - Our Neighbourhood Art” as well as a rest area for visitors to relax.

Modo Baemikkumi Sculpture Park
Cosy park where sculptors’ works and the beach form harmony

This is Modo Baemikkumi Sculpture Park where the beautiful seascape and artworks form gorgeous harmony. The term, Baemikkumi, stems from how the beach resembles the bottom hole of a boat. Located on Modo Island, which is the youngest among the Sinsimodo Islands of Incheon, Baemikkumi Sculpture Park is approx. 15 to 20 minutes away from Sindo Wharf by car. After Sculptor Lee Ilho fell in love with the beach, he moved his workshop and began to display some of his works in the front yard, which has led to today’s sculpture park. About 60 to 70 works are exhibited on the grass lawn where you can also check out the famous “Stairway to Heaven.”
On the opposite side of Modo lies Bakjugi Beach at the end where a sculpture of “Modo” in English letters grabs your attention. This is a symbolic photo zone of Modo Island so don’t forget to stop by and take some artistic selfies.
