Lots of choices and types of places to stay in E.P. One has to make the best guess based on the descriptions and reviews if you haven't had prior experience. So the Appenzell turned out to be pretty much as described and a good choice for a short stay. For an older property, most is more updated and in good shape.
Plus: Comfortable clean room. Pretty quiet except if someone is stomping on the floor above (that didn't last long). Amenities included coffee maker with supplies and real mugs, sat/cable TV choices, DVD player with library in building, and nice gas fireplace. Interesting to have a large Jacuzzi tub by the bed that provided for a relaxing soak.
Neutral: So many overstuffed pillows, hard to find room to put them. Very firm mattress which was OK, but bouncy so that if partner moved, I got bumped around also. Grounds in fairly good shape, but some work going on. Average continental breakfast (did not know this was included, so a bonus).
Minus: Automatic minus one rating point for non-working sink drain closure. Is there one hotel in America where the drain plug works properly? It felt weird to take a shower in the Jacuzzi tub right next to the bed, so I didn't. Used the one in the pool house instead. Spa tub was kind of murky. Pool house could use some updating and attention to details. Hard to lock door of shower room.
Summary: Had a comfortable few days and would consider here again if back in area.
