The Royal Liverpool Philharmonic is the second-oldest society of its type and manages the longest-surviving symphony orchestra in the United Kingdom, which performs in a historic 1930s art deco hall. The name 'Royal Liverpool Philharmonic' applies to the society, the orchestra it fields and the hall in which it performs.

This organisation dates to the 19th century and offers a sense of history and tradition that few other distinguished orchestras can match. Its recordings go as far back as the late 1930s, and even today, it's one of the most highly regarded orchestral societies in the world.

History of the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic

The Royal Liverpool Philharmonic grew from humble beginnings as a society of amateur musicians that first met in the 1830s. The first formal concert was held in 1840, and the first hall went up in 1849.

The original building was destroyed by fire in the 1930s and was replaced by the current structure in 1939. The society resisted pressure to cease performances during World War II and instead increased its concerts. By 1942, it was a permanent body, and by 1957, was granted 'Royal' status with the Queen becoming the patron. It continues its legacy to this day.
