The Palm House has been a unique part of Liverpool’s Sefton Park since 1896. It’s a spectacular three-tiered dome conservatory, filled with an impressive array of more than 20 varieties of Palms and one of the oldest horticultural collections in Britain. Alongside 32 Orchid Plants and a selection of plants from 5 different continents, the Palm House presents an interesting collection of plant life.

The rest of Sefton Park surrounding the Palm House is beautiful in its own right, with 200 acres that are home to daffodils and bluebells in the spring, plus a lovely boating lake.

Highlights of the Palm House

Considering the surrounding wildflowers and abundant British trees, it’s no surprise that the Palm House hosts over 60 weddings per year. Upon the Palm House’s original construction in 1896, funded by Liverpool millionaire Henry Yates Thompson, the House kept a variety of exotic plants.

Since its original creation, the House has endured a variety of ups and downs, from The Liverpool Blitz from World War ll in 1941 to poor restoration that almost led to the House falling into unmanageable disrepair. Local students in Liverpool during the 90s began to promote the desperate need for the House’s proper restoration.

Good to know when visiting the Palm House

If you’d like to allocate enough time to explore Sefton Park as a whole, plan to arrive late morning or early afternoon to explore the grounds and walk around, plus viewing the Palm House itself. If you’d like to grab lunch or find yourself peckish for an afternoon snack, check out the cafe, or pack a picnic lunch to eat outdoors in the park.

Admission to the Palm House and Sefton Park is free, but the Palm House today is preserved by an official charity, ‘Friends of Sefton Park Palm House’. If you enjoy your visit, consider donating to help maintain the House for future generations of visitors.
