Bad 'chef', bad attitude, bad hygiene, a liability
We booked 3 nights on HB, we don't eat lunch so all good was taken care of. On our last night I chose the penne pasta with tomato sauce. When it arrived Ifound the sauce to be very thick with a bad taste. I think it was just a few cherry tomatoes and some awful tomato paste. I tried to eat it but had to give up. I asked the waitress to change it. She apologised and tookk the plate away. She quickly returned to tell me the 'chef' says there is nothing wrong with it and has refused to change it.
Can you imagine that, and in a Mercure Hotel??!! I was intending to complain next morning but events overtook that. All evening, my stomach ached. At 10pm, I needed the toilet. While using the toilet, I suddenly became dizzy, cold sweats and feeling really awful. That passed about 5 mins later, I was still using the toilet. Suddenly and without warning I projectile vomited. Most went into the handbasin but also on the floor. I went down to reception to ask for some cleaning materials. The hotel kindly sent a cleaner to our room.
This is a fabulous hotel, fabulous, friendly and helpful staff let down by just one individual, a complete liability. The hotel manager was very apologetic and promised action would be taken to prevent the maverick 'chef' from ever interacting with future guests. So, after some consideration, I feel 5 stars would be excessive even though well deserved by 99.9% of the staff. I was very poorly, vomiting an additional 4 times during the night so 3 stars
