Split is rich with photogenic spots thanks to the wealth of Roman ruins that you can find scattered throughout the city. You also have many Instagrammable spots along the Adriatic coast, which easily make their way to many a traveller's bucket lists.
The Old Town has places that retain their rich heritage on seemingly every corner – none more so than the Diocletian's Palace. The red terracotta roofs of the buildings and the rich blue of the sea look fantastic in any weather, especially under the summer sun. Peristyle Square

Peristyle Square (known locally as Peristil) is the central square in the Old Town of Split. It’s found in the Diocletian Palace, with the faux Roman architecture lining the square.
A popular place for taking photos is under the white marble columns that line the square. Try to get here in the early morning as the whole area becomes very busy as the day wears on.

The vestibule is a grand old room with a towering open dome above it, which was the formal entrance to the living quarters in Diocletian’s Palace. The sunlight plays with this architectural feature as it moves along the stone walls throughout the day with a bright patch of blue sky overhead.

The view from the top of Saint Dominus Cathedral in Split is a special selfie spot as you can capture the beautiful terracotta roofs of the Old Town down below. It is quite pokey up there so you may have to wait to get the best spot. Even so, it’s worth it.
You can find Saint Dominus Cathedral (known locally as Sveti Dujam) in Split Old Town and is one of the city’s most iconic buildings. After enjoying the view from the bell tower, head inside (which require a separate ticket) to see the crypt and the Temple of Jupiter.

The viewpoint on Marjan Hill

Marjan Hill, set within a forest park at the west end of the Split peninsula, is home to many pathways and jogging trails. Locals and visitors often come to enjoy nature and hike to the summit, where they can take in magnificent views of the city.
It’s easy to spot the top of the hill as there’s a Croatian flag flying. The 178-metre-high viewpoint has incredible views of Split Old Town and the harbour. On the way up, you’ll find plenty of benches in case you need a rest or just want to enjoy the view.

Mestrovic Gallery
Explore the stunning summer house of a famed artist

Mestrovic Gallery (known locally as Galerija Meštrović) has a fantastic collection of artworks from the famed Croatian sculptor, Ivan Meštrović. This building – built in the 1930s on the coast of Split – was designed by the artist himself and was intended to be his summer residence.
Spend an hour admiring the marble, bronze and wood sculptures inside the gallery, then wander the grounds and find some beautiful backdrops for your pictures.

Sailing out of Split harbour
Spend the day visiting the islands off the coast of Split

With the ocean breezes billowing and a catamaran cutting its way through the Adriatic, a photo aboard a boat heading out of the Split harbour is a classic summer picture.
An island-hopping boat trip is one of the most fun things to do in Split, thanks to the amount of amazing sandy coves and fantastic coastline found just a few miles out from Split. You can find many companies offering a range of boat trips along the promenade.

Kliss Fortress

The medieval-era Klis Fortress is just a short drive from Split. You might recognise the castle as the ‘City of Meeren’ from Game of Thrones. There’s even a room inside the castle dedicated to filming the TV series.
Don’t forget to stop by the onsite museum, which displays a nice collection of costumes and swords. Apart from its main attractions, the Klis Fortress also offers magnificent views.

One of the best things to do in Split, especially on first visits, is paying a visit to the famous Pjaca Square, home to the Town Hall. Here, you can admire the stunning architecture from the Venetian era. The Old Town has many cute restaurants and cafes where you can unwind with a drink or 2.
If you want to mingle with the locals, head for the Fish Market – it occupies a Secession-style building, which makes for impressive photos.
