Lazio is a region in central Italy dominated by the city of Rome and offering a world of iconic ruins and ancient sites as well as many modern amenities. While you’re here, you’ll get to explore sites like the Colosseum, the ancient port city of Ostia, where you can still see a Roman theatre and mosaics, and the Apennine Mountains. Also part of Lazio is Vatican City, the seat of the Catholic Church and home of sites like the Sistine Chapel with Michelangelo’s famous ceiling. The Pantheon is a landmark temple dating back thousands of years and including historic tombs.
The Borghese Gallery and Museum offers hundreds of masterworks of Renaissance art, while Villa Borghese features an astonishing home and gardens from the 17th century. Castel Sant’Angelo is a cylindrical castle dating to the 2nd century and houses a museum of ancient artefacts. To get a bit more modern, check out MAXXI, the National Museum of 21st Century Arts.
